Gender and crime Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Gender and crime - Essay Example was ââ¬Å"strongly related to rising unemployment and an increasing sense of despair among the groups, which finds expression or outlet through aggression and violenceâ⬠and these crimes were dominant ââ¬Å"in depressed and impoverished areas, such as council estates in the U.K since the late 1980s, often accompanied by new forms of crime such as ram-raiding, joy-riding and the rise of alcohol-induced brawling in towns and citiesâ⬠( Edwards, 2006, p. 11). Thus, one can obviously come to the conclusion that crimes in U.K had been associated with masculinity as majority of the crimes in U.K was committed by males and the women were thought to be incapable of subjecting themselves to any violent crimes. However, one can notice that factors such as the emergence of new women liberation movements, growth in feminism and women empowerment have been instrumental in increasing criminal offences by women at an apparently a faster rate than offending by men since the 1960s. While criminology in U.K were always focussed on males crimes and offending towards the last two decades of the 20th century ââ¬Å"female incarceration rates were sky-rocketing, leading to a surge in research on girls, women, crime, and the criminal justice systemâ⬠and as the researchers have very well put it the war on drugs and the federal sentencing reform were the two factors that resulted in the incarceration of women (Miller, 2009, p. 246). Similarly, one can also notice that female Prisoner Population in England and Wales rose considerably in the 1970s to the 1970s. It is, therefore, imperative that there are more of extensive researches and studies on female offending in the U.K. It was Freda Adler who f irst argued that females crime rates have been on the rise in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. The researcher concluded that ââ¬Å"women offenders were changing their patterns of offending to more ââ¬Ëmasculineââ¬â¢ styles, becoming more aggressive and violent; and that this was due to the growth of the

ERG international, inc - Essay Example The case study of Environmental Research Groups International, Inc. (ERG) proffered issues pertinent to evaluating the overall business plan and future prospects of the organization given previous experiences. ERG is currently owned by spouses Claude and Sherrie Robbins, who both have been instrumental in steering the company from its meager beginnings as a two-person operating entity, to an organization spanning the areas of energy, natural resources, and the environment. With a just recently lost bid for a 5-year, $12 million contract for the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) technical services hotline, Claude Robbins remains optimistic of the future thrusts and prospects for the organization. 2. Executive Summary The study aims to present an understanding of facts and situations that need to be addressed given diverse areas that impact ERGââ¬â¢s operations. The paper would be outlined by initially presenting a summary of the business plan of ERG with i dentified objectives. Likewise, the discourse would delve into relevant details of the business including a brief historical background of the company, its products and its development and growth process. The companyââ¬â¢s strengths and weaknesses would likewise be identified; including the main issues that currently face the organization. Finally, the factors that contributed to ERGââ¬â¢s success and the key factors affecting the industry, in general, would be determined, prior to discussing the proposed strategies that would be recommended to achieve identified goals. A. Brief Summary of Plan To achieve growth goals of increasing revenue and size, ERG plans to focus on using government and utilities as their target markets with large and mid-size contracts. The organization likewise plans to target the private sector through focusing on the top 1000 Fortune companies. ERG would offer services ranging from developing, managing, and evaluating demand-side management (DSM) prog rams, conservation programs, and alternative supply side options; as well as the development of innovative options for fuel consumption and improved technological efficiencies. The strategies that are planned to be used, as envisioned by ERGââ¬â¢s personnel are: ââ¬Å"(1) creating a board of directors, composed partly of influential industry insiders who were likely to be aware of requests for proposals, (2) spreading out the marketing function by providing incentives to existing staff for obtaining future contracts, and (3) hiring a person whose sole task would be to solicit projects, with compensation tied to acceptance rate or profitabilityâ⬠(Winn 12). B. Major Objectives According to Claude L. Robbins, President of ERG, there are growth plans for the organization, to wit: ââ¬Å"using government and utilities as a base, ERG would like to (a) expand our federal government contracts, particularly multi-year small business (and Woman-Owned Business) set-asides (which we h ave not actively pursued in the past), (b) develop long term consulting relationships with public and private utilities that are developing, managing, and evaluating demand-side management programs, conservation programs, and alternative supply side options (including cogeneration, and alternative fuels), (c) increase current work level for present client base. In the private sector ERG would like to focus on: (a) working with Fortune 1000 companies to develop energy efficiency and conservation policy as well as developing energy efficient buildings, (b) developing private sector industrial DSM and conservation programs, and (c) work with companies to develop/test new energy efficient technologyâ⬠(Winn 11). As clearly indicated, the goal for the company is ââ¬Å"to increase ERG's revenues and its size substantially over the next five yearsâ⬠(Winn 11). 3. History of the Business A. Argument Supporting Work-Life Balance Initiatives Essay
Argument Supporting Work-Life Balance Initiatives - Essay Example Furthermore, many companies now make a block leave mandatory, along with implementing work cut off hours. In addition to that, companies offer volunteer-work leaves in a calendar year which an employee can use to perform his or her philanthropic work. All of these are very attractive to a very wide range of people. So companies that offer these initiatives are able to target more potential employees than companies that donââ¬â¢t. à Work life balance is not just about the employee and his benefit. Hall reports that businesses lose an estimated staggering value of $300 billion in a year as a result of over-stressed and unhappy employees (2006). Companies do not want burned out, unhappy employees with little creativity and imagination. In fact, the richer and deeper an employeeââ¬â¢s overall life, the more productive and creative he is going to be at work. The personal life and experiences of a person give him this depth and perception. A work life imbalance has a full-circle do minoes effect which starts with the employee and affects his work, his family, the company, the community and the government. These losses are emotional as well as monetary. à When drafting the work-life balance plan, managers need to understand that this is not just about giving employees a so-called break, but also utilizing resources in such a way that the goodwill and creativity of the entire team is included in the mix. Medical Information Confidentiality Research Paper
Medical Information Confidentiality - Research Paper Example The questionnaires were distributed in five primary care clinics. The receptionists in these clinics were requested to issue questionnaires to all the patents who visited the clinics. The survey was intended to run for three weeks and it was aimed at collecting 100 questionnaires (Whiddett et al. 532). Patients were requested to answer all the questions and put them in a collective box in the respective clinics. Alternatively, they could return them using pre-paid envelopes. The research team did not monitor the issuance of the questionnaires or make attempts to identify repeat respondents and non respondents (Whiddett et al. 532). This was the major limitation facing the exercise however; it did not impact on the findings as the sample size was adequate. The survey was representative enough as the clinics were chosen to represent a wide range of demographics. The questionnaire covered three key areas. These are basic demographics, attitudes towards sharing different kinds of informa tion and patientsââ¬â¢ knowledge towards information sharing practices. Secondly, secondary data was used to complement the findings that were obtained from the survey. The information will be collected from a peer reviewed sources, credible internet sources and medical journals that have conducted similar studies. A comprehensive study of past case studies reveals that medical confidentiality in the health sector is at a risk of getting eroded due to the use of the current technology. The respondents are wary about sharing their personal information to various parties and the study reveals that most of them are not aware of the increasing information sharing practice in the medical field (Levenson 20). The third question is aimed at finding out the level of awareness about medical confidentiality (Whiddett et al. 534). It also gives information on varying attitudes across ethnic groups. Starting up a new consultancy business for healthcare staffing in the Thesis Proposal
Starting up a new consultancy business for healthcare staffing in the US - Thesis Proposal Example The American government accords top priority to this industry as it is the backbone of the nationââ¬â¢s progress. The report by the Industrial College of Armed Forces, Washington, suggests that in the US, healthcare is one of the ââ¬Å"largest and most fragmented industries,â⬠comprising ââ¬Å"600,000â⬠service providers of different types of care and it also accounts for ââ¬Å"14 million jobsâ⬠(Healthcare: An Industry Analysis and Strategic Recommendation for the Future: Final Report 4). Thus, healthcare industry has high relevance in this country in terms of the revenue it generates and employment opportunities it creates. However, the industry currently confronts a lot of issues especially in the context of shortage of healthcare staff and particularly of nurses. This problem may entail shortfall in providing care to the patients, which may adversely affect the performance and reputation of the healthcare organizations. Therefore, filling up the vacancy of st aff is one of the primary concerns of various hospitals as well as other healthcare service providers in the US. Viability and Prospects for a Healthcare HR Consultancy: The report by the Industrial College of Armed Forces, Washington, further finds that shortage of primary care physicians has prevailed in the country since long and ââ¬Å"the number per 100,000 has increased from 118 in the year 2006 to 120 in 2010â⬠(7). On the other hand, the report by Price Waterhouse Cooperââ¬â¢s Health Research Institute indicates that current trends predict the nurse shortage by 2020 to be ranging from ââ¬Å"400.000 to more than 1 millionâ⬠(What Works: Healing the Healthcare Staff Shortage 6). Therefore, various efforts are underway in an attempt to bridge the gap in demand and supply of doctors and nurses. Such efforts include ââ¬Å"promotional campaigns, flexible work-study programs for advanced degrees and leadership interventions that promote the value of nursing and teach ingâ⬠(23). Thus, a positive environment exists currently in the country in terms of job opportunities for nurses, which offers favorable conditions for recruiting nurses from overseas countries. At this state, launching a consultancy service for the recruitment of doctors and nurses from countries such as India, Philippines and China as well as other countries will be an attractive business opportunity in the US. World View (Why it is Important in the World): Abundant Resources: ` Developing Asian countries, especially India, Philippines and China are good sources today for talent hunting, especially in the areas of nursing. These countries are emerging as the economic powers of the future and coupled with it, many developmental activities have been undertaken in these nations in the past. These include improvement in the areas of education and technology and thus these countries have achieved great progress recently. Thus, they have talented and skilled workforce with a good sense of dedication and commitment to the profession they choose. Data on CGFNS, which is a qualifying test for nurses before they write the NCLEX examination in the US, for the years 2000 ââ¬â 2006, indicates that ââ¬Å"51838â⬠Philippines, ââ¬Å"24242â⬠Indian and ââ¬Å"1020â⬠Chinese nurses appeared for the examination, for seeking immigration to the US (Brush 21). Thus, these countries are good sources for recruiting nurses for addressing the shortage of nurses in the US. Positive Environment: In the post
ABB Case Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
ABB Case - Essay Example In the 1990s, ABB was to consolidate its market space by going for major acquisitions. The company's sales that was at about USD 15 billion in 1988 and 1989, went to over USD 30 billion in the mid 1990s. But the acquisitions did not yield the results that were expected by the company and the company went into a spin. By 1997 and later in 1998, there was a steep fall in the sales turnover of the company. The turnover fell to USD 20 billion in 1999 and the company started its divestitures. Though a higher profit was indicated in the years 1999 and 2000, it was primarily out of these divestitures. Now under this background a new strategy was worked out for the company and the strategy has to be viewed under this perception.2. Solid foundation and operating profitability is more critical than the number of businesses the company does. The company moved into a number of new areas of business that were not really contributing to the profitability of the company.2. A corporate culture for ex cellence and perfection in execution has to be stressed by the company. This would help the company capitalize on the man power and on the efficiency of operation of the company. These formed the core of the strategy adopted by the company. The implementation of every one of these issues was brought about in both the structure of the organization and in the spirit of the organization.... 'At home everywhere' was made the slogan of the company. 5. Innovation will be core of the growth in all areas of business. More research establishments were positioned and more patents registered during the next five years. These formed the core of the strategy adopted by the company. The implementation of every one of these issues was brought about in both the structure of the organization and in the spirit of the organization. Question 2 Organization Structure Figure 2: Interlinked business structure The company would essentially work on a business structure that is interlinked and would produce the required result. The organization will have two major product groups; one, the process automation and two, the power systems. And derivatives of these products will also interlink the businesses and strengthen them as well. In either of the cases, this will help in customer sharing as well as in strengthening the technology in addition to cost sharing. 1. This strategy will help in strengthening the basic strategy of concentrating on the core business strengths of the company, namely, the automation and power sector. 2. This will also help in identifying the major revenue sources or customers who would provide better margins to the company's operations. 3. By providing this kind of product organization and support, the customer will get supporting products and services that complement one another. This will increase the overall margins of the company which is also the major thrust for their operation. 4. The company visualizes this to provide an effective cost leadership in the market place. By concentrating on specific product lines, the economies of scale could be leveraged to their advantage. This would help the

Comprehensively and systematically analyze how American foreign policy Essay
Comprehensively and systematically analyze how American foreign policy is made and implemented. Government American Foreign Policy - Essay Example A study of the Presidential candidates and Congressmen gives away an important truth, namely that the political leaders of the country emerge from an elite socio-economic background. As a result, their loyalties are firmly rooted to their friends in corporate America, thereby neglecting the general public. For example, former President George W. Bush has close links to major oil companies in America. Vice President Dick Cheney was formerly the CEO of Halliburtun Corporation. It is no surprise then that invading oil-rich Iraq was a key objective of their eight year reign. After the decision to invade Iraq was formally announced, the stock prices of oil and energy companies, including Halliburton shot up. The Bush Administration proceeded with the war despite vociferous public outcry against the invasion, both within and outside the United States. Such trends are far from democratic ideals and goes on to reinforce the words of caution given by former President Dwight Eisenhower, who fa mously remarked in his farewell speech that much of the policy initiatives in America are made within the framework of the Military-Industrial complex. Consequently, the foreign policy initiatives serve the vested business interests rather than the general public. Some of the liberal intellectuals in the world have pointed to the United States high-handed foreign policy measures in the last half century. These include Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Robert Fisk, etc. They correctly point out that the United States governments tend to adopt double standards in several cases. For example, the US government did not intervene during the East Timor genocide because the perpetrators of the crime was Indonesia ââ¬â a strong strategic ally. The same is true with respect to Saudi Arabia. Despite the availability of copious evidence to prove the Kingdoms poor human rights standards, Washington continues to maintain cordial relations with
