Jane Eyre :: essays research papers
Jane Eyre is the main character in the novel Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte. She is a fictional character along with the book. The book takes place in the mid 1800’s. Jane lives in five different places which greatly affect her life. The first place Jane stays is Gateshead Hall. She then goes to live at Lowood School. From Lowood Jane proceeds on to Thornfield Hall. She then advances on to Moor House. Finally, Jane reaches her final home at Ferndean. All of this happens within two decades and the novel is told in first person, which is Jane Eyre. The first place Jane stays is Gateshead Hall. While at Gateshead, Jane is treated unfairly and is punished for things she did not do. After the death of Jane’s parents, her uncle, Mr. Reed brought Jane into his house. On her uncle’s deathbed Mrs. Reed promises to treat Jane like one of her own children. Jane’s aunt, Mrs. Reed, does not like Jane and has a very hard time doing this. She feels Jane was forced upon her family after the death of her parents. Against her husband’s request, Mrs. Reed does not treat Jane like a human being and is constantly criticizing and punishing her. In one example Jane was keeping to herself, reading a book when her cousin John Reed decided to annoy her. John then grabbed the book and threw it at her knocking her down and cutting her on the head, which bled and was very painful. Mrs. Reed then punished Jane by sending her into the red room, the room her uncle died in, for the entire night. While in the red room Jane became terri fied and thought she saw or heard the flapping of wings. The treatment Jane received caused her to become bitter and to truly dislike Mrs. Reed. Jane then goes on to live at Lowood School. While at Lowood Jane meets a young girl named Helen Burns. Helen taught Jane many things about life and religion. Jane recalls a time when Helen was scolded for not cleaning her nails or washing her face. Mrs. Scatherd, throwing out the fact that the water was frozen proceeded to punish Helen by smacking her on the back of the neck with a bundle of twigs. Jane is amazed at Helen’s ability to accept the punishment, eventhough it was not Helen’s fault.

Death Penalty Essay -- essays research papers
Death Penalty à à à à à When turning on the television, radio, or simply opening the local newspaper, people are bombarded with news of arrests, murders, homicides, and other such tragedies. I believe murder, including the death penalty, is the worst thing that anyone could do. Since Hammurabi first introduced the notion of ââ¬Å"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a toothâ⬠, people have been arguing over whether this is just punishment. Those in favor of the death penalty argue that people should pay for the crimes they do. For them, death is the only fit punishment in some cases. This is not the case. The death penalty is, rather, unethical and wrong. A death for another death does nothing but satisfy one's need for revenge. How often do these concepts creep into the publicââ¬â¢s mind when it hears of our ââ¬Ëfair, trustyââ¬â¢ government taking away someoneââ¬â¢s breathing rights? I am strongly against the death penalty because it violates Godââ¬â¢s rules, costs the tax payers too much money, and the possible ââ¬Å"wrongly accused.â⬠à à à à à I do not support having the death penalty because it violates religious beliefs. Many religions, such as my own, Catholicism, follow the rules that God sent to us through the Ten Commandments. One of the most important of those ten state, ââ¬Å"Thou shall not kill.â⬠If someone is executing an individual, that clearly violates this commandment. Most of the people today are supposed to live Christian lives, but they donââ¬â¢t mind people getting killed. I am pretty sure if it were som...

Comparing poems from different cultures. Essay -- English Literature
Comparing poems from different cultures. Many poems deal with the theme of cultural identity. I have chosen three to compare, they are: Search For My Tongue, by Sujata Bhatt Half-Caste, by John Agard and Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan, by Moniza Alvi. I chose these three poems because I feel that they all deal with different aspects of cultural identity. For example Search for my tongue covers the aspect of losing your native tongue and using a ââ¬Ëforeignââ¬â¢ language, Half-Caste addresses the point of racism and stereotyping, whilst Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan highlights the issues of alienation and not being able to fit in with either side of your family. Search For My Tongue is quite unusual as instead of the text being in one language all the way through it starts in English and then changes into Arabic part of the way through. This leaves the reader with a feeling of disorientation and that the reader, unless bilingual in those two languages, can not read or make sense of the foreign language. This poem also relays to you the fact that even if youââ¬â¢ve forgotten your mother tongue and donââ¬â¢t speak it for some time it will always come back and blossom if it is used enough. The poet also puts the point across by repeating the word tongue over and over again. The foreign tongue can never take the place of the mother tongue, because it is part of your own identity. The passage ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦.but over night while I dream it grows back..ââ¬â¢ gives the impression that although you may speak in the foreign language most of the time you still dream in your native tongue and it will never go away. The poem ââ¬ËHalf Castââ¬â¢ also deals with the aspects of a different language but instead of writing in a ... ...e to fit in with either side of their family. For example when her Aunts bring the Candy-striped glass bangles they snapped and made her wrists bleed, this is because people from Asia are very small boned, so because of her being mixed race she was not able to put then. Also it says that her school friends where not impressed by her Salwar kameez, they wanted to see weekend clothes and where not interested in the mirror work or the story how three of them sailed toto England. I find all of these poems very interesting and thought provoking. My favourite out of these three is half-caste because it give such a strong point and all the examples make sense. Where we live there arenââ¬â¢t many people from different cultures, so we donââ¬â¢t face racism and people from mixed race that often. These poems make you see the points of view and traditions of other cultures.

Fyne Piece of Marketing Case Study
CASE STUDY 1. 1 A ââ¬ËFYNEââ¬â¢ PIECE OF MARKETING As the strode purposefully into the board room to make his presentation to the firmââ¬â¢s monthly directorââ¬â¢s meeting, Fred Fahr, General Manager of Fyna Foods Ltd, felt just great. His confidence was that of someone who knows he has faced a problem and come up with the right answers. ââ¬ËLadies and gentlemen,ââ¬â¢ he began, ââ¬Ëas you are aware, two months ago we were given the opportunity to supply the Beefies Hamburger Chain with their new Supa-Long French fries. At the time, we all agreed this was great potential business for Fyna Foods, but that it also posed a major problem for us ââ¬â what to do with the excess potato left over after we supply Beefies with the extra-length fries. Unfortunately, we still havenââ¬â¢t been able to come up with a perfectly square potato! To dump this excess material would mean almost certainly making a loss on the Supa-Long Fires business. I am very pleased to be able to report to you today; however, that my team has come up with what we feel is a pretty fine solution. Fred deliberately paused as he sensed the increased air of anticipation around the table. Even old Thomas Fynaski, the firmââ¬â¢s octogenarian founder, seemed to rouse himself from his doze. ââ¬ËWe found the answer by combining the excess potato material with other vegetables to create a breakfast burger,ââ¬â¢ Fred went on. ââ¬ËI have to say the lab boys have done a really good job and created a product that Fyna Foods can be proud of. My family doesnââ¬â¢t usually eat hot breakfasts, but we all tried some the other morning and agreed they were really quite nice.Once we had the product developed I gave it to our marketing people and theyââ¬â¢ve decided to call it ââ¬Å"Bubble and Squeakâ⬠ââ¬â itââ¬â¢s what we used to call leftovers back in the 1960s. I am sure we all remember when we were kids,ââ¬â¢ he joked, ââ¬Ëhow good leftovers used to tas te the next morning. Weââ¬â¢ve decided to advertise it as ââ¬Å"The delicious breakfast alternative to bacon and eggsâ⬠. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhat about the factor? ââ¬â¢ one of the director asked. ââ¬ËThis product doesnââ¬â¢t look like anything we produce at moment. ââ¬ËWell, you know how our Production Departmentââ¬â¢s managers are,ââ¬â¢ replied Fred. ââ¬ËIf the factory had its way, weââ¬â¢d never produce anything that wasnââ¬â¢t quick and cheap to run through the machines. Anyway, we have agreed to pack the new line in boxes of 24 burgers, which nicely fits our packaging machinery. The factory were pleased with that. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHow do the numbers stack up, Fred? ââ¬â¢ asked Daphne Green, the Finance Director. ââ¬ËPretty good, actually,ââ¬â¢ Fred replied as he flicked up a chart. See, we start with the excess potato tonnage from the Supa-Long contract. Thatââ¬â¢s equivalent to sales about 400,000 packs of Bubble and Squeak in the fir st year. We think the Supa-Long contract is going to grow at about 10 percent per annum, so we also need to budget to increase Bubble and Squeakââ¬â¢s sales by that amount each year. We do have a bit of problem with price, which Iââ¬â¢m still working on. The Sales Department is concerned it wonââ¬â¢t be able to move these volumes of product at the price the accountants have given us.Iââ¬â¢m not too worried about that, though, because the product development people, in their normal way, have produced a super premium quality product in the test kitchen ââ¬â a bit too good, really, for the market weââ¬â¢re aiming at. Iââ¬â¢m confident that we can play around with some of the ingredients and quantities and get the product costs down to a level that Sales can live with. ââ¬ËWeââ¬â¢ve got a few rough edges to smooth off,ââ¬â¢ concluded Fred. ââ¬ËBut, overall I think weââ¬â¢ve come up with an excellent solution that lets us take on the Supa-Long contrac t and gives us a great new product for Fyna Foods. There was a general murmur of approval around the table. As it subsided, however, Fred noticed that Bill Wyse, the recently retired Marketing Director of a large transnational food business had his hand raised waiting to catch the chairmanââ¬â¢s eye. As silence returned to the room he spoke for the first time during the meeting. ââ¬ËWell, Fred,ââ¬â¢ he said quietly. ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢ve obviously put a lot of work into this. I can tell you feel youââ¬â¢ve done a great job. But in my humble opinion, you donââ¬â¢t seem to appreciate what marketing is all about. ââ¬â¢ Questions 1.Collect three descriptions of marketing, one from a text, one from a marketing practitioner, and one form someone who does not work in the marketing fied. Which perception seems the closes to Fyna Foods teamââ¬â¢s activities on the Bubble and Squeak project? Justify your choice. 2. From the perspective of Bill Wyse, what differences are th ere between the production stage, the selling stage and the marketing stage of marketing management evolution? 3. In what areas might a food manufacturing company such as Fyna Foods be subject to societal criticisms?

Charcoal Poultice and Charcoal Drink as Treatment to Leg Ulcers Essay
The use of charcoal as a simple remedy for different health problems is an ancient way of treating many common diseases that afflict humankind dates back in the time of Hippocrates who lived from 460 to 370 B. C. In the late 1800, Ellen G, White spearheaded the use of charcoal in the treatment of different diseases. She said, ââ¬Å"The Lord has given some simple herbs of the field that at times are beneficial; and if every family were educated in how to use these herbs in case of sickness, much suffering might be prevented, and no doctor can be called. One of the most beneficial remedies is pulverized charcoal placed in a bag and used in fomentations. This is a most successful remedyâ⬠¦I have prescribed this simple remedy, with perfect successâ⬠¦This works like a charm. â⬠The use of charcoal in treating diseases is a product of long years of scientific studies. Charcoal is defined as an amorphous, porous form of carbon made by the destructive distillation of almost any carbonaceous material such as wood, coconut shells animal bones, and corn cobs. The medicinal properties of charcoal are given strong boost by the United States (a book that tells how to prepare and use medicines). Besides giving direction for making charcoal, the Dispensatory lists several problems that can be treated with charcoal. Activated charcoal exerts its effects by absorbing a wide variety of drugs and chemicals. The important work of charcoal powder in the treatment of diseases is to adsorb chemical substances that are harmful to the body, like germs, viruses, toxins, wound secretions, and other products of infections. To adsorb means to take up, hold on, or spread out on the surface of the molecules. Charcoal works like a magnet. Charcoal poultice is made up of charcoal powder mixed with enough water to make into a paste. It is spread into a thin dry cloth with all the sides folded over the charcoal paste and then applied over the affected area of the skin or over the body organ. From thirty minutes to two hours after the application of the charcoal poultice, there is a feeling of itching around the area or a little pricking pain. That is because charcoal sucks what it can absorb from within. The advice is to never remove the poultice. Keep it on because your body is responding positively to the treatment. Pain may be felt from three to seven days. The internal use of charcoal powder is called charcoal drink. Charcoal drink is made of charcoal powder diluted in a glass of drinking water according to dosage for medical purposes. The charcoal drink is tasteless. The taste of the drinking water when mixed with charcoal powder doesnââ¬â¢t change. There is no difference in taste between a glass of clear drinking water and a glass of water with charcoal powder. The only difference is the color. Treatment is a therapy used to remedy a health problem. It is a process or intervention in the design of experiments a method of combating, ameliorating, or preventing a disease, disorder, or injury. Active or curative treatment is designed to cure; palliative treatment is directed to relieve pain and distress; prophylactic treatment is for the prevention of a disease or disorder; causal treatment focuses on the cause of a disorder; conservative treatment avoids radical measures and procedures; empiric treatment uses methods shown to be beneficial by experience; rational treatment is based on a knowledge of a disease process and the action of the measures used. Treatment may be pharmacologic, using drugs; surgical, involving operative procedures; or supportive, building the patientââ¬â¢s strength. It may be specific for the disorder, or symptomatic to relieve symptoms without affecting a cure. Leg ulcers refer to full thickness skin loss on the leg or foot due to any cause. They occur in association with a range of disease processes, most commonly with blood circulation diseases. Leg ulcers may be acute or chronic. Acute ulcers are sometimes defined as those that follow the normal phases of healing; they are expected to show signs of healing in less than 4 weeks and include traumatic and postoperative wounds. Chronic ulcers are those that persist for longer than 4 weeks and are often of complex poorly understood origin. There have been a vast number of case reports of individuals who have benefited most decidedly from external applications of charcoal. Charcoal has been found to adsorb wound secretions, bacteria, and toxins. It appears to keep the bacteria from entering the blood stream. D. If You Have to Ask and Pleasant Personality Essay
1.What Is A Pleasant Personality? No matter what you create in life before you can create it you have to know and understand what it is that you are creating. If you are not consciously creating then you will create through default with the outcomes being random, unpredictable and often unpleasant. A personality is your set of characteristics which is made up of your attitudes, your beliefs, your knowledge, your perceptions, your behaviours, your interests and other personal traits that you hold. Your personality communicates your quality as a person . Your pleasant personality distinguishes you and is what makes you appealing to others. We have all met and interacted with those who have unpleasant personalities and have experienced the upsets created that come from our exchanges with them. In order to consciously create your pleasant personality you must first be aware of what your attitudes and behaviours are towards people and life. You have to take ownership of your knowledge rather than pretending not to know or worse, refusing to acquire knowledge and skills . You have to examine your beliefs and your attitudes . Further, what mood level do you operate in? Can you move easily through the different moods or are you chronically stuck or fixed in a low mood level or in the pretense of a high mood level that you really donââ¬â¢t feel? 2. Your Pleasant Personalityà Your pleasant personality is defining you for those with whom you come in contact or interact with. What do you want people to know about you? How do you want to be perceived by others? What characteristics do you have? Are you helpful? Are you an inspiration to others? Do you have a sense of humor? Are you dependable? Are you empathetic? Are you friendly? Each of us has a unique blend of characteristics that contribute to our individual personalities. Draw on the best of these characteristics, the most positive of them and use your attributes and abilities to create your own, one of a kind, pleasant personality! Make a list of them if you have to. Your pleasant personality will shine through whatever identity you are wearing, be it your business identity, your spousal identity, your parental identity, your friend identity or any other number of identities you wear as you play your games in life. You may not wear the same identity to MacDonaldââ¬â¢s as you would to the Four Seasons but your pleasant personality will co-ordinate with any identity that you consciously and purposefully choose to wear. 3. Why Develop A Pleasant Personality? You can be the smartest person in the world and you can be willing to tackle whatever task is at hand but if you have failed to develop a pleasant personality you will be hard pressed for an audience and it is unlikely that you will be chosen as a vital member of a team. It is therefore vital that you develop a pleasant personality. It is essential as you go out and about in life that you be aware of what your personality is saying and demonstrating about you. Whether you like sales or not every time you interact with another or others you are giving a sales pitch. You are building a reputation and you are telling others who you are not just by your name but by the knowledge you have and the level or responsibility you take for that knowledge. Of equal importance is the personality you use to convey your messages to others. 4. What Are The Consequences Of Having A Pleasant Personality? From the above you will have identified the characteristics of your pleasant personality. If you find that your personality has been predominantly unpleasant ask yourself, ââ¬Å"What have been or could be the consequences of having an unpleasant personality? Keep asking yourself that question until all the consequences of having an unpleasant personality have been brought to view. Then, with your identified characteristics of a pleasant personality ask yourself, ââ¬Å"What have been or could be the consequences of having a pleasant personality? Keep asking yourself that question until all the consequences have been brought to view. If you find that you already have a pleasant personality your having defined the characteristics of that personality will allow you to take full ownership of and empower your pleasant personality. Ask yourself, ââ¬Å"What have been or could be the consequences of having a pleasant personality? Keep asking yourself the question until you have viewed all the consequence thereby acknowledging yourself while raising your confidence level. Having a pleasant personality and using it to its full extent will empower you in life and it will serve to empower and inspire others. Then, as Dr. Seuss so aptly put it, ââ¬Å"Oh the places you will go.ââ¬

Main characteristics of a marketing orientated organization Essay
Marketing-oriented organization is defined to have characteristics as having FOCUS ON CUSTOMERS and the customers are regarded as top of organization chart. Continuous analysis of the marketplace helps them to adapt, promote, and differentiate their products and service to meet customersââ¬â¢ needs (Enterprise automation group, accessed 2009). Through satisfying customers, these organizations can get PROFITS. The STRUCTURE of marketing-oriented organization often has few layers and their policies are not very difficult. Moreover, the STRATEGIES of a market oriented organization are generally clear and flexible because it deals with ââ¬Å"market definition and selection, positioning and differentiation, and market entry or exit decisionsâ⬠(Drumwright & Kosnik, 1989). Finally, before making important decisions, organization has to carefully consider the EXPECTATIONS OF STAKEHOLDERS, their perceptions and attitudes. Analyzing Canonââ¬â¢s position, the company is a marketing orientated organization due to having features as customer orientation, design of organization structure, formulation of strategies and stakeholders (Blurtit, accessed 2010). It can be clearly seen that all of the companyââ¬â¢s performances are closely related to the characteristics of marketing orientation. Firstly, all decisions of Canon consider CUSTOMERS FIRST and they share the common value of superior quality of products. Canon attaches special importance to the quality of products and customerââ¬â¢s convenience. This care is shown in the COMMITMENT of the company: ââ¬Å"We are fully committed to earning the trust of customers by providing well-developed services and support along with well-designed products that are easy to use and reliable.â⬠(Canon report 2008). According to the scenario, Canon provides products which offer users ââ¬Å"not only convenience, quality and versatility but also a unique lifestyleâ⬠. Furthermore, in Vietnam, Canon centers have been established to provide support services before and after sales for the product line from Canon such as cameras, camcorders, printers and photocopiers (Chau An, 2009). All of these facts show that Canon is a CUSTOMER-ORIENTED company. Secondly, the ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE of Canon is flat structure. Canon focuses on ââ¬Å"an organizational structure in which market and customer feedback is quickly relayed to development teams and swiftly reflected in products, but also the boosting of technological strength on the sales frontâ⬠(Canon, accessed 2010). Thirdly, the STRATEGY OF MARKET ORIENTATION of Canon is long-term and flexible. Canon has strategies such as ââ¬Å"reposition itself effectively through systematic long range technology forecasting, identification of product segments with high potential and introduction of products in these segments ahead of competitorsâ⬠and using ââ¬Å"globalization, alliances and innovation in a well-coordinated mannerâ⬠. The strategy of Canon can be termed as ââ¬Å"dynamic competence building in which distinctive competencies are renewed with the objective of dynamically maintaining its competitive edgeâ⬠. (Bowonder and Miyake, n.d.). Recently, Canon has developed a strategy named ââ¬Å"VICTORYâ⬠, which concentrated on Asian market including India, China and Vietnam. The strategy aims to improve the position of Canon in these markets. ââ¬Å"Vietnam is the first destination of this plan. We are working to implement a dual strategy making Vietnam market both a production location and an important strategic market for the products of Canonâ⬠, said Hideki Ozawa ââ¬â the Chairman and CEO of Canon Asia (Tuyet An, n.d.). In sum, the strategy of market orientation of Canon is very clear, solid and well-established so that Canon can carry out plans in target market effectively. Finally, Canon considers the EXPECTATIONS OF THE STAKEHOLDERS before making important decisions. Canon cares much about how well the company has met stakeholdersââ¬â¢ expectations such as requires for information, high-level performance, and meaningful engagement (Sustain ability, accessed 2010). Nowadays, in the age of marketing orientation, businesses are led to be PROFIT-ORIENTED. Following this orientation, Canon produces what people want to buy in order to maximize profit. Grasping the idea that users favorà products which have eye-catching appearance, give them convenience, and save time, Canon has released two product lines SELPHY ES3 & ES30, laser printer LBP3250, LBP5050 & LBP 5050N. By providing market offerings that satisfy customers, Canon can also get the income. Therefore, Canonââ¬â¢s profit can be gained through customer satisfaction. In conclusion, Canon has characteristics of a marketing oriented organization. Canon not only concentrates on the customersââ¬â¢ satisfaction, having the appropriate organizational structure and formulation of strategies but also takes consideration of stakeholders. Through getting these points, Canon can achieve success as gaining profit and enhancing the position in the market.
